AI citations and AI referral traffic measure different things

An AI citation is a source link returned with an observed answer. AI referral traffic is a tracked website visit with a source signal associated with an assistant. Neither is a complete count of how often people see your brand in AI answers. DataSag exposes both observations separately.

A citation records one answer

When you run a saved prompt through DataSag, the AI prompt report sends a request to the OpenAI API with web search. It collects the answer text and URL citation annotations returned by that request. The report marks citations that match the target website domain.

The result includes the prompt, model, target, time, and returned links. A positive result means your domain was cited in that sample. It does not prove that every response to the same question contains your site. A missing citation means that particular answer did not return a matching citation.

Open each important cited URL before drawing a conclusion. A citation to your homepage answers a different editorial question from a citation to a detailed installation guide. Read the surrounding answer to check whether the cited page supports the claim and whether the product description is accurate.

A referral records an arrival

In AI visibility, choose Your traffic and run Analyze AI referrals. This report uses the last 90 days of tracked visits. It groups recognizable assistant sources, landing pages, and weekly activity. It can work without a separate AI provider connection because the source data comes from your website tracking.

The report relies on signals present in the recorded visit, including referrer and supported campaign fields. A browser referrer can be empty. An app or browser policy may remove information before the visit reaches your website. Do not relabel every direct visit as AI traffic to fill the gap.

On high-volume projects the report can use a capped sample of the most recent 30,000 pageviews. Read the limitation shown with the saved report before comparing totals. A sample cap changes what the report can establish about the full period.

Read common combinations correctly

If a page appears in a prompt test but receives no recorded AI visits, the answer may not have produced clicks. The prompt may also represent a small audience, or visits may lack usable source signals. Improve the page and its next action only after checking the observed answer and landing experience.

If recorded AI visits increase while your saved prompt still omits your domain, people may be asking other questions. A small prompt set cannot cover every intent. Use the landing pages that receive traffic to discover additional questions worth observing.

If both observations improve after a release, describe the association with its dates and sample sizes. Other changes may have happened at the same time. The evidence supports a useful hypothesis, but it does not isolate a cause by itself.

Create a measurement record you can repeat

Keep prompt wording stable for repeated observations. Compare the same model, target domain, and question. DataSag shows comparable samples from its recent saved reports. If you change the question to mention your brand, treat that as a different test.

  1. Choose a small set of customer decisions and save the exact questions.
  2. Run the selected prompt and read the answer and source URLs.
  3. Record whether the citation supports the answer and which page it uses.
  4. Inspect the AI referral report for the same landing pages.
  5. Write down the content release date and compare later observations without merging the two measures.

Measure the next useful action

An arrival matters when the landing page helps the visitor. Check that the page answers the question that led to the visit, loads correctly on a phone, and offers a sensible next step. A setup guide should make the required code and verification step easy to find.

You can define a custom event for a meaningful action, such as a confirmed signup. Fire the event when the action succeeds. Do not claim that a button click is a completed signup or payment. Plan access and implementation determine which event reports are available.

Keep the final report explicit: observed citations, recognized AI referral visits, and completed actions. Each number needs its source, period, and limits. That record is more useful for the next product decision than an unexplained visibility score.
